Painter. Observer. Lover of the wild, the quiet, and the light that falls between things.
Steph Norval has spent decades with his eyes on the natural world — the way a storm rolls across the highveld, the quiet gold of a late-afternoon bush, the textures only seen when you sit still long enough to really look.
Working in both oils and watercolour, Steph brings a different quality to each medium. His oils are layered and textured — bold knife work, rich impasto, colour that holds warmth. His watercolours breathe differently: luminous, loose, letting the paper show through like light itself.
Based in South Africa, his subjects are drawn from the landscapes, flora, and built remnants that surround him — crumbling Karoo farmhouses, rocky outcrops blazing with afternoon light, still watercourses fringed with skeletal trees. Painted not as documentation, but as emotion.
"I don't paint what I see. I paint what I feel when I see it." — Steph Norval
Steph's works have found homes in private collections across South Africa. He takes on a limited number of commissions each year, working closely with clients to understand not just the subject, but the feeling they want to live with.
Traditional oil on canvas, built in layers for luminous depth. Palette knife and brush work together — texture you can feel from across the room.
Loose, luminous, honest. Steph's watercolours capture the essential — a flooded plain, a ruined wall, a dead tree standing sentinel.
Rooted in the colours of Africa — rich ochres, deep greens, warm siennas, and the particular blue of a clear South African sky.
Every work begins with an obsession with light — where it falls, how it changes, what it reveals and what it conceals.
Steph takes a limited number of commissions each year. Whether it's a beloved landscape, a family farm, a wild animal, or a place that holds meaning — he can paint it.
The process is collaborative and unhurried. You'll be involved at key stages and won't be presented with a finished work until it's right.
